Chao discusses Houston Asian-American Archive

Anne Chao ‘05 (at back, standing), adjunct lecturer in the School of Humanities, presented “Live! The Houston Asian-American Archive (HAAA): An Eight-Year Retrospective” May 3 at the Chao Center for Asian Studies’ offices in a conference room in the Mechanical Laboratory. In 2009, Chao co-founded the archive for which she serves as project manager. Its mission is “to foster a deeper understanding of Houston’s immigrant history” and “to document the unique cultural legacy of Asian-Americans.” Managed by the Chao Center and housed in Fondren Library’s Woodson Research Center, HAAA is one of the few archives in the country that documents the lives of Asian-Americans. “Since its modest beginning in 2009, HAAA has become a popular symbol for Rice University projects that bridge the gap between university research and community engagement,” event organizers said.
