A high-profile tweet for Richards-Kortum

Melinda Gates, co-chair of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, tweeted to her more than 570,000 followers Oct. 7 that Rebecca Richards-Kortum is an example of someone who empowers women and girls. “Helping women and children lead healthy lives and empowering young women scientists to create innovative solutions are what motivates Dr. Richards-Kortum’s work,” Gates wrote on her profile of the Rice professor on her “Empowering Women” blog on tumblr.com. The tweet linked to that profile, which includes a video of the TedXHouston talk given in 2010 by Richards-Kortum and Maria Oden. Richards-Kortum is the Stanley C. Moore Professor of Bioengineering and professor of electrical and computer engineering and director of both Beyond Traditional Borders and Rice 360°: Institute for Global Health Technologies; Oden is professor in the practice of engineering and director of the Oshman Engineering Design Kitchen.
