Feminist Economics, founded by Rice’s Diana Strassmann, now ranks second among top women’s studies journals, according to Thompson Scientific’s latest citation index. Among 175 economics journals, it ranks 20th.

”Our rankings moved up from those reported last fall because some citations were apparently left out accidentally when previous calculations were performed for the ISI Social Science Citation Index,” said Strassmann, professor of the practice in humanities and editor of the journal.

As the scholarly journal of the International Association for Feminist Economics, Feminist Economics serves as a forum for lively debate and diverse viewpoints on timely topics, such as gender and aging, and women and wealth.

It now ranks higher than such long-established and well-known economics journals as the Review of Economics and Statistics, World Development and Economic Journal. ”And it’s only five places below the American Economic Association’s flagship journal, the American Economic Review,” Strassmann noted.

Thompson Scientific’s ISI Social Science Citation Index is the most prestigious index for scholarly social-science journals. Rankings are based on the number of articles cited in other scholarly works during 2003 and 2004, and they provide an indication of a journal’s impact.

All articles in Feminist Economics are peer-reviewed. The quarterly journal’s prestigious editorial board brings together economists — including Amartya Sen and three other Nobel Prize winners — with writers from other disciplines and with alternative perspectives.

When Strassmann started the journal in 1994, nothing like it existed. With Rice’s support from the beginning, the journal’s staff has grown to include three full-time editorial staff members, as well as several graduate student fellows. The journal is available in more than 5,000 libraries and institutions around the world and has about 600 individual subscribers.
