The following faculty promotions were approved at the May meeting of the Rice University Board of Trustees, effective July 1.

• To the rank of professor: Bonnie Bartel, biochemistry and cell biology; Fathi H. Ghorbel, mechanical engineering and materials science; Matthias Heinkenschloss, computational and applied mathematics; Thomas Jaber, Shepherd School of Music; and Boris Yakobson, mechanical engineering and materials science.

• To tenure at the rank of associate professor: Andreas Lüttge, Earth science, and Uwe Steiner, German and Slavic studies.

• To the rank of associate professor with tenure: Anna Bogomolnaia, economics; Anthony Brandt, Shepherd School of Music; Marcia Brennan, art history; David Ferris, Shepherd School of Music; Gustavo Grullon, Jesse H.
