Undergrads
to showcase their work at third RURS

Rice students
who have conducted research during the undergraduate years
will showcase the fruits of their labors Friday, April 16,
at the third annual Rice Undergraduate Research Symposium
in Grand Hall, Rice Memorial Center.

The symposium,
which will feature work by undergraduates who are conducting
or have conducted independent and group research, will include
a keynote speaker, two poster sessions and brief presentations
by the students to a panel of judges. Cash prizes will be
awarded to the top posters in each division.

Also being presented
will be the Jenessa Shapiro Award. This award was established
to honor the student founder of the Rice Undergraduate Research
Symposium (RURS), Jenessa Shapiro, who graduated in 2002.
The award is given to the undergaduate student presenter
who embodies the ideals of the scientific enterprise exhibited
by Shapiro throughout her career at Rice: curiosity, ingenuity,
creativity and hard work. The recipient will be chosen by
the RURS steering committee.

RURS is designed
to expand the research opportunities for students and allow
them to gain conference experience. More than 100 undergraduates
participated in the first RURS held in April 2002.
