Casley Matthews, a senior health sciences and social policy analysis student, is lead author of a paper in the Journal of American College Health that describes how the COVID-19 pandemic negatively impacted the nutrition of Houston college students. Matthews concluded that students decreased their consumption of fruits and vegetables during the pandemic. She also noted higher rates of food insecurity among participants than national rates, as well as significant differences in food security status by race/ethnicity and social class. Cassandra Diep, an assistant teaching professor of kinesiology, is corresponding author of the paper.

Austin Fehr, a graduate student in the labs of Rice chemical and biomolecular engineers Aditya Mohite and Michael Wong, is one of 44 awardees at 36 United States universities chosen for the Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Science Graduate Student Research Program. Fehr will work at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory in the basic science for clean energy and decarbonization division. Awardees spend up to a year in critical research programs, including data science, at one of DOE’s 12 national laboratories. Austin will work with Francesca Toma, part of the DOE Hub for conversion of light to chemicals called LiSA (Liquid Sunlight Alliance) to develop halide perovskite-based photoelectrochemical cells for carbon dioxide reduction.
