Rice Architecture spring lectures look beyond the pandemic

Lectures

Rice Architecture’s spring lecture series will put forth “New Perspectives” on the global pandemic as they relate to social, political and spatial conditions.

Lecturers will address the precarious states of government, labor, domesticity and the ecology during COVID-19 and its compounding crises, and how to reformat them for the future.

Feb. 10, noon: Elizabeth Timme and Chaz Kern of LA Más, the Llewelyn-Davies Sahni Innovative Practice Lecture, “I Heard You Build Benches.”

Feb. 15, noon: Troy Schaum, associate professor of architecture and partner, Schaum/Shieh, “Faculty Talk: Blanking.”

Feb. 22, noon: Albert Pope, Gus Sessions Wortham Professor of Architecture, “Faculty Talk: A Promethean Increment.”

March 2, 10 a.m.-3:30 p.m.: A virtual symposium organized by Brittany Utting, assistant professor of architecture, “CARE-WORK: Spaces, Bodies and the Politics of Care.”

March 3, 6 p.m.: Silvia Federici, professor emerita of New College, Hofstra University, CARE-WORK closing lecture.

March 10, noon: Nayan Shah, professor of American studies and ethnicity and history, University of Southern California, “Spatial Inequities: The ‘Chinatown’ Problem in Today’s Pandemic Times.”

March 17, 6 p.m.: Huang Sheng-Yuan, principal, Fieldoffice Architects, “Living with Sky, Water and Mountain: A Path Towards Freedom.”

March 24, noon: Lydia Kallipoliti, assistant professor at The Cooper Union and principal, ANAcycle thinktank, “Bubble Problems: An Archeology of Infection and Environmental Control.”

March 31, 6 p.m.: Hélène Frichot, director, Bachelor of Design, and professor of architecture and philosophy at the University of Melbourne, “Following the Dirt: Troubling Architecture.”

April 5, noon: Christopher Hight, associate professor of architecture, “Faculty Talk: Global Littorals.”

April 14, noon: Jen Wood and Emanuel Admassu, founding principals, AD-WO, Rice Design Alliance Spotlight Award and Lecture, “Immeasurability.”

April 21, 6 p.m.: Rice Design Alliance Civic Forum 2021.

Rice Design Alliance is an American Institute of Architects/Continuing Education Services Registered Provider of quality educational programs. For each lecture, attendees earn one learning unit.
