Rice students recently met with Elisa Villanueva Beard, CEO of Teach for America, through the Doerr Institute for New Leaders' excursion program.

Villanueva Beard spoke with the students in a small setting about her experience of and passion for being a change agent. “I think that is so important for anyone that wants to be a true change agent, you have to viscerally feel it in your gut to be able to put forth the kind of solutions that are necessary when you're facing such a massive problem and massive inequities that exist in our country," she said.

“Our leader excursions are more than an entertaining field trip,” said Stephanie Taylor, the Doerr Institute's assistant director of leader development. “Excursions are half-day learning experiences in which students take leadership stories from Houston’s top leaders and debrief them using a framework that leads to plans for student growth moving forward.”
