Thanks for your questions! Darwin did mean related in a phylogenetic sense, as he compared introduced species from genera that were and were not already represented in the introduced range. Certainly I would agree that we would expect sister species that had been diverging sympatrically (in the same geographic area) to differ in their resource use. However, the question here is about what happens when species diverge allopatrically (in different geographical areas) for some time and then come into contact again. In this case, we shouldn’t necessarily expect phenotypic divergence to be strongly correlated with phylogenetic distance.

When Darwin said “closely related”, was he necessarily speaking genetically/phylogenetically? Or could *he* have meant phenotypically? Given what we know about mechanisms of speciation these days, isn’t it actually likely that two very closely related species in the same geographical area will be pretty divergent in their resource usage? The closest match niche-wise might well be some critter that’s only “related” by convergence! Clearly I need to go read those bits in the *Origin*. Thanks for a good article!

I was privileged to have supper with Nelson Mandela in the early 1990s when I was a graduate student at the University of Cape Town. He was gracious and charismatic and exuded joy for life. Madiba was a great man who led in order to serve.

Intuition tells me that this is true, but don’t engineering solutions actually improve quality of life per se, at least for the fortunate few? I guess the question is not so much if quality of life improves, but for whom quality of life improves.

I think another factor is that married individuals are often less likely to take risk in their actions due to the responsibility to their spouse (and perhaps their kids if they have). When one lives a responsible life, the probability for a accidental death is reduced.

But, METRO needs to open up all of its live data so independent developers can create apps and other useful products. It’s very difficult to imagine continued ‘in-house’ development of useful products for METRO users to use.

My question would be how long do you think it will be until some treatment for this disease is found?
I think that the key to this and other successful discoveries is collaboration.
I see too many researchers unwilling to share data and work together. I love that this collaboration has been so successful.
