Virtual Energy Summit to explore industry’s resilience

The fourth annual -- and first virtual -- Energy Summit hosted by the Center for Energy Studies at Rice's Baker Institute for Public Policy and Baker Botts LLP will feature an examination of the industry by more than 20 of its leading experts.

The four-part summit, which begins Sept. 30, will include discussions with corporate and government leaders and academic experts. Topics include carbon neutrality, power markets, the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic and how economics, policy and technology are driving change across the industry.

Former Secretary of State James A. Baker III, the honorary chair of the Baker Institute, will discuss the new book “The Man Who Ran Washington: The Life and Times of James A. Baker III” with authors Peter Baker and Susan Glasser in a special segment Oct. 7.

Dave Turk, deputy executive director and head of the strategic initiatives office at the International Energy Agency, will speak Sept. 30. Bernard McNamee, former commissioner of the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission, will speak Oct. 2.

Other key speakers include Gretchen Watkins, president of Shell Oil Co., on Sept. 30, and Spencer Dale, group chief economist at BP, on Oct. 9. Edward Djerejian, director of the Baker Institute, and John Martin, managing partner of Baker Botts, will give welcoming remarks Sept. 30.

The program chairs are Ken Medlock, fellow in energy and resource economics and senior director of the Center for Energy Studies at the Baker Institute, and Baker Botts partners George Fibbe, Thomas Holmberg and Andrea Stover.
