Associate professor of history Caleb McDaniel has won the 2020 Avery O. Craven Award for his book, “Sweet Taste of Liberty: A True Story of Slavery and Restitution in America.” The award is given annually by the Organization of American Historians to the author of the most original book on the coming of the Civil War, the Civil War years or Reconstruction. McDaniel, the incoming chair of Rice’s history department, was also one of 10 nominees for this year’s Gilder Lehrman Lincoln Prize.
