Expo to help employees chart career paths at Rice set for May 22

Human Resources (HR) is set to host its first Careers at Rice Expo, which will include breakout sessions, informative booths and a panel showcase.

Careers at RiceAll employees are encouraged to join HR representatives and campus leaders on May 22 from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. in McNair Hall’s Anderson Family Commons for an in-depth look at the key priorities of Careers at Rice and learn about how the tools, resources and programs will benefit their own careers.

“We’ve designed this event with (everybody) in mind,” said Joan Nelson, associate vice president for human resources. “We want Rice employees to have the correct tools and resources to be the best employees they can be.”

When the university launched Careers at Rice last year, its immediate goals were to create a new job structure that enabled staff members to fully understand the requirements of their current positions, explore job opportunities and develop plans to build their careers at Rice, Nelson said.

The expo features breakout sessions that will provide resources to staff and supervisors on a variety of career-related topics. Rice experts will share information on transferable skills, networking, how to receive feedback, hiring the “Rice” candidate and staff development. There will also be several booths providing information on tools and resources, perks and getting connected on campus.

Nelson will helm the Expo Showcase, a panel discussion featuring various staff members sharing how they successfully navigated their careers at Rice. The showcase begins at noon, and light refreshments will be provided. Registration is required.

Other breakout sessions will cover everything from résumé building to tuition benefits. Register by visiting the expo page and selecting any of the following:

  • Here’s my resume, so call me maybe?
  • Cooking up your career
  • Creating your elevator pitch
  • Wait, how did I get here? Charting a career path at Rice
  • Navigating Rice tuition benefits
  • LinkedIn or LeftOut …
  • Mindful and meaningful feedback

The following sessions are available for supervisors (registration is required):

  • Developing world-class staff
