Francisco Monaldi, who was born in Venezuela and is the fellow in Latin American energy policy at the Baker Institute, is available to discuss with the news media the latest political developments in the country and what they mean for the United States and Houston.

“Houston has the second-largest Venezuelan American community in the country, and it’s estimated at more than 50,000 people,” said Monaldi, who is also the interim director of the institute’s Latin America Initiative. “The overwhelming majority of them oppose incumbent President Nicolás Maduro intensely and support interim President Juan Guaidó and largely also U.S. policy toward the country.”

Founded in 1993, Rice University’s Baker Institute ranks among the top three university-affiliated think tanks in the world. As a premier nonpartisan think tank, the institute conducts research on domestic and foreign policy issues with the goal of bridging the gap between the theory and practice of public policy. The institute’s strong track record of achievement reflects the work of its endowed fellows, Rice University faculty scholars and staff, coupled with its outreach to the Rice student body through fellow-taught classes — including a public policy course — and student leadership and internship programs.
