CNN’s John Avlon to discuss George Washington’s legacy, continued relevance at Rice’s Baker Institute March 5

HOUSTON – (March 1, 2019) – In his book “Washington’s Farewell: The Founding Father’s Warning to Future Generations,” author and CNN senior political analyst John Avlon describes the significance of President George Washington’s Farewell Address, a cautionary letter to his fellow citizens about the forces he feared would destroy democracy.

Avlon will visit Rice University’s Baker Institute for Public Policy March 5 to speak about how U.S. leaders have drawn inspiration from Washington’s address and how Washington’s words can shed light on such controversial topics in modern American politics as partisanship, coexistence and foreign policy.

The event is free and open to the public. Registration is required at www.bakerinstitute.org/events/1992.

Who: John Avlon, senior political analyst and anchor at CNN who appears on “New Day” every morning. From 2013 to 2018, he was the editor-in-chief and managing director of The Daily Beast.

Allen Matusow, the William Gaines Twyman Professor Emeritus of History at Rice and director of academic affairs at the Baker Institute, will introduce Avlon.

What: A presentation titled “Washington’s Farewell: The Founding Father’s Warning to Future Generations.”

When: Tuesday, March 5, 6-7:30 p.m. A reception will be held at 5:30.

A book signing will follow the presentation. Copies of the book will be available for purchase from the Rice University Campus Store.
