Mayor declares Oct. 2 ‘Dr. Quianta Moore Day’ in honor of Baker Institute fellow

Mayor Sylvester Turner declared Oct. 2 “Dr. Quianta Moore Day” in Houston for Moore’s work in early childhood development. Turner and Houston City Council member Karla Cisneros presented Moore, the Child Health Policy Fellow at Rice’s Baker Institute for Public Policy, with the proclamation at City Hall Tuesday.

“Dr. Moore has helped funders and community stakeholders develop strategies to support an equitable future for children and their communities,” the proclamation says. “Her most recent work involved identifying and making policy recommendations to improve early childhood development, which were disseminated nationally and locally.”

Moore received a bachelor’s degree in sociology from Cornell University, a Juris Doctor from the University of Houston Law Center and a medical degree from Baylor College of Medicine. She has spent years developing research-driven policies to advance the health of children, employing mixed methodologies including community-based participatory research and surveys to gain insight into the health needs of communities and to develop tailored health policy recommendations.

After Hurricane Harvey, in partnership with the mayor’s office, UNICEF and First3Years, Moore led efforts to host socio-emotional support training sessions for families and their young children. This work resulted in over 650 families being served and an increased parental awareness of how to recognize and address Harvey-related trauma.

Moore has partnered with the City of Houston Health Department and Harris County to provide early childhood development parenting classes in Women, Infants and Children centers in the region. She also conducted a comprehensive needs assessment with the Houston Independent School District to identify challenges young people face that can prevent them from achieving academic success.

In closing, the proclamation honored Moore “for her work, leadership and advocacy to ensuring that every child has the opportunity for a bright and prosperous future. The City of Houston commends and appreciates Dr. Quianta Moore on her accomplishments and extends best wishes on all future endeavors.”
