HOUSTON – (Aug. 10, 2017) – Suman Bery, the former chief economist at Royal Dutch Shell, will discuss India’s recent energy policy initiatives in the context of the larger forces shaping the country’s energy policy at Rice University’s Baker Institute for Public Policy Aug. 25.

Hosted by the Baker Institute’s Center for Energy Studies, the event is free and open to the public but registration is required.

Who: Suman Bery, Shell’s chief economist based in The Hague, Netherlands, until 2016. He is currently a nonresident fellow for Brussels-based think tank Bruegel as well as a senior fellow at the MasterCard Center for Inclusive Growth.

What: An event titled “The Next Three Decades: Energy in India’s Transformation.”

When: Friday, Aug. 25, 8:30-10 a.m. (Breakfast will be served at 8.)

Where: Rice University, Baker Hall, Kelly International Conference Facility, 6100 Main St.

India’s growth over the next three decades will require a transformation of its energy system in the face of enormous global uncertainty related to energy supplies, prices and technologies, according to event organizers. Bery’s presentation will draw on his joint work with leading Delhi energy research institutions.

Prior to his position at Shell, Bery served as director general of the National Council of Applied Economic Research, one of India’s leading independent nonprofit policy research institutions.

Founded in 1993, Rice University’s Baker Institute ranks among the top five university-affiliated think tanks in the world. As a premier nonpartisan think tank, the institute conducts research on domestic and foreign policy issues with the goal of bridging the gap between the theory and practice of public policy. The institute’s strong track record of achievement reflects the work of its endowed fellows, Rice University faculty scholars and staff, coupled with its outreach to the Rice student body through fellow-taught classes — including a public policy course — and student leadership and internship programs.
