Rice U. expert available to discuss situation with North Korea

HOUSTON – (Aug. 9, 2017) – As U.S. President Donald Trump promises “fire and fury” for North Korea should the country strike the U.S. territory of Guam, Rice political scientist Richard Stoll is available to discuss the situation and what can be expected.

“The current situation with North Korea contains a number of elements: continued progress by North Korea toward developing intercontinental ballistic missiles with nuclear warheads and escalating rhetoric by both North Korea and the U.S.,” Stoll said. “It will be very difficult — even with the new sanctions approved by the United Nations — to convince North Korea to abandon its nuclear program. So the situation is dangerous, but there is reason to believe it can be resolved without violence.”

Stoll is the Albert Thomas Professor of Political Science in Rice’s School of Social Sciences and a scholar at Rice’s Baker Institute for Public Policy. His research focuses on forecasting terrorism and the quantitative study of international conflict, which he studies by using both statistical analysis and computer simulation. He is quoted regularly by local and national media outlets on issues involving national security and international conflict.
