Unconventional students at Rice 2017: Mei Tan

Mei Tan, a Lovett College senior majoring in computer science and visual and dramatic arts, wanted to do something completely different when she got to college.

“During O-Week, something that really inspired me was this idea they kept pushing that you can completely reinvent yourself,” Tan said. “As if your life is this video game and all of the mechanics you’ve learned up to this point didn’t matter, because now that you’re on this platform, you can look around at your new environment and learn something new and interact with this environment in a different way.”

Her desire to try new things led her to switch majors from political science to computer science and discover a passion for acting and theater.

“I think that people are multifaceted and one of the great things about Rice is that you can seek the opportunities that will feed your soul in different ways and you can choose which parts of your soul you want to feed,” Tan said.

Tan has accepted a position with Microsoft and will be moving to the Redmond, Wash. area after graduation.
