Refugee crisis in Greece to be in focus at Rice Media Center April 22
HOUSTON – (April 19, 2017) – A film screening and discussion at Rice University April 22 will put the refugee crisis in Greece in focus and provide information on how to volunteer to support the refugees.
At the event, Sandeep Ray, the Henry Luce Foundation Postdoctoral Fellow in Southeast Asian Studies at Rice’s Chao Center for Asian Studies, will screen scenes from “Safe,” a documentary he is filming that follows the life of Syrian refugee Abeer Yaseen and her family, who are struggling to reunite after fleeing their home. Ray is a volunteer at a refugee camp in Chios, Greece.
The screening will be followed by a Q&A session and discussion with Ray; Kim Proal, an ambassador for the Norwegian nongovernmental organization Drapen i Havet (A Drop in the Ocean); and Yaseen, who will join the discussion via Skype from Norway. The session will also include information about the logistics of volunteering in Greece at refugee camps.
Presented in conjunction with “Green light — An artistic workshop” at the Moody Center for the Arts and in collaboration with the Chao Center and Rice Cinema, the event is free and open to the public.
