‘Julius Caesar’ among spring events at Rice’s Shepherd School of Music

HOUSTON – (March 3, 2017) – Events at Rice University’s Shepherd School of Music during March and April include the Shepherd School Opera’s production of “Julius Caesar,” faculty recitals and season finale orchestra concerts.

Unless otherwise noted, all performances below are free and open to the public and held in Alice Pratt Brown Hall on the Rice campus.

What: SYZYGY, New Music at Rice, featuring faculty members Matthew Strauss on percussion, Benjamin Kamins on bassoon and students of the Shepherd School. The program will include music by faculty composers Karim Al-Zand and Art Gottschalk as well as composers David Colson, Jon Nelson, Mario Davidovsky and Brett Dean.

Where: Duncan Recital Hall.

When: March 5 at 8 p.m.

What: Hӓndel’s “Julius Caesar,” featuring the Shepherd School Opera and Chamber Orchestra, with Richard Bado as conductor and stage direction by Tara Faircloth. The opera will be sung in Italian with English surtitles.

Where: Wortham Opera Theatre.

When: March 6, 8 and 10 at 7:30 p.m.

Tickets: $12 for reserved seating; $10 for students and senior citizens. Call 713-348-8000 for more information.  

What: Faculty and guest artist recital featuring William VerMeulen on horn and guests Lara Nie on voice and Mei Rui on piano. The program will include music from Schubert, Canteloube, Dilorenzo, Jackson and more.

When: March 16 at 8 p.m.

What: Guests artist recital. OSMOSIS String Quartet will perform as part of the Shepherd School’s chamber music exchange program with the Hochschule für Musik und Theater Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy in Leipzig, Germany. The program includes Haydn’s String Quartet in C Major, Op. 76, No. 3 “Emperor”; Shostakovich’s String Quartet No. 7 in F-sharp Minor, Op. 108; and Schumann’s Piano Quintet, Op. 44 with Shepherd School graduate piano student, Sohee Kwon.

Where: Duncan Recital Hall.

When: March 17 at 8 p.m.

What: Shepherd School Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Larry Rachleff. The program includes Dvorak’s Cello Concerto in B Minor, Op. 104, featuring soloist Joshua Halpern and conductor Jerry Hou, and Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 8 in C Minor, Op. 65.

Where: Stude Concert Hall.

When: March 25 at 8 p.m.

What: Shepherd School Contemporary Ensemble, conducted by Associate Conductor Jerry Hou. The program includes Dallapiccola’s “Piccola Musica Notturna” (Ben Manis, graduate student in orchestral conducting); Berio’s “Folk Songs,” featuring soloist Karol Bennett (Jerry Hou, conductor); and Lindberg’s “Corrente” (1992).

When: March 26 at 8 p.m.

What: Faculty recital: “Passion and Pictures,” featuring Jon Kimura Parker on piano. The program will include Beethoven’s “Appassionata Sonata,” Rachmaninoff’s “Preludes,” Ravel’s “Jeux d’Eau,” Alexina Louie’s “Scenes from a Jade Terrace,” Bernard Herrmann’s “Fantasies” and William Hirtz’s “The Wizard of Oz.”

When: March 29 at 8 p.m.

What: Guest artist recital featuring Philippe Bianconi on piano. The program will include music from Chopin, Debussy’s “Preludes from Book 1 and 2” and Schumann’s “Carnaval Op. 9.”

Where: Stude Concert Hall.

When: March 30 at 8 p.m.

What: Guest artist recital featuring Thomas Trotter on organ. The program will feature virtuosic works for organ.

Where: Edythe Bates Old Recital Hall and Grand Organ.

When: March 31 at 7:30 p.m.

What: The Rice Chorale along with vocal and instrumental students of the Shepherd School present J.S. Bach’s “St. Matthew Passion” for the first time at Rice University.

When: April 3 at 7 p.m.

What: Spring Chamber Music Festival: “Spotlight on Music of Our Time.”

When: April 7 at 5:30 p.m. and 8 p.m.; April 8 from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Beginning April 3, programs and performance times will be available on the Shepherd School website (www.music.rice.edu) or by calling 713-348-8008. 

What: Hear&Now, a student-led new music ensemble: “Late Night.” The program will include music from faculty member Karim Al-Zand, Dutilleux, Adams, Ligeti and Reich.

Where: Hirsch Orchestra Rehearsal Hall.

When: April 13 at 9 p.m.

What: Shepherd School Chamber Orchestra, conducted by Larry Rachleff. The program will feature Tchaikovsky’s Variations on a Rococo Theme, Op. 33, featuring cello soloist Erik Wheeler, (Jerry Hou, conductor), Brahms’s Variations on a Theme by Haydn, Op. 56 and Haydn’s Symphony No. 96, “Miracle.”

When: April 20 at 8 p.m.

What: Shepherd School Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Larry Rachleff. The program includes Schoenberg’s Variations for Orchestra, Op. 31 and Strauss’ “Alpine Symphony.”

Where: Stude Concert Hall.

When: April 21 at 8 p.m.

Admission: Tickets are required, but admission is free. Call 713-348-8000 to reserve tickets beginning March 20.

What: Faculty recital featuring Sohyoung Park on piano. This program includes Mozart’s “Fantasy” in C Minor, K. 475, Schubert’s “Wanderer Fantasy,” Op. 15 and Schumann’s “Fantasies for Piano,” Op. 16.”

When: April 23 at 8 p.m.

What: Sharing the Spotlight series, featuring faculty members Kathleen Winkler on violin, James Dunham on viola and Shepherd School students. The program includes faculty member Pierre Jalbert’s Piano Trio No. 1, Schumann’s Piano Trio No. 1 in D Minor, Op. 63, and Mozart’s String Quintet No. 3 in C Major, K. 515

Where: Duncan Recital Hall.

When: April 28 at 5:30 p.m.

What: Faculty Recital: Beethoven’s Op. 30, featuring Cho-Liang Lin in violin and Jon Kimura Parker on piano. The program will feature Beethoven’s three Op. 30 sonatas: Sonata No. 6 in A Major, No. 7 in C Minor and No. 8 in G Major.
