Designs on East Houston

Rice students, alumni and local architecture firms participated in the annual design charrette sponsored by the Rice Design Alliance and its rdAGENTS and hosted by the Rice School of Architecture. The challenge, a collaboration this year with the East Downtown Management District, was to reimagine an underutilized, industrial neighborhood east of downtown Houston. Two Rice student teams competed in the competition held Jan. 28; above, from left, the team of Maddie Bowen, Michael Moran, Andrew Bertics and Mike Hua work on their entry. The Houston architecture firm of Asakura Robinson won the competition with the plan to reconfigure the five-block area shown in detail below.
