Super-hard metal ‘4 times tougher than titanium’
Titanium is the leading material for artificial knee and hip joints because it’s strong, wear-resistant and nontoxic, but an unexpected discovery by Rice University physicists shows that the gold standard for artificial joints can be improved with the addition of some actual gold. Emilia Morosan, associate professor of physics and astronomy, of chemistry and of materials science and nanoengineering, and former graduate student Eteri Svanidze are quoted. Pulickel Ajayan, the Benjamin M. and Mary Greenwood Anderson Professor in Engineering and founding chair of the Department of Materials Science and NanoEngineering; graduate student Sruthi Radhakrishnan; and postdoctoral research associate Chandra Sekhar Tiwary are mentioned.
