TRADE/PROFESSIONAL

Religiosity diminishes conservative opposition to eco-friendly buying
Some people have perceived that the combination of religion and political conservatism exacerbates environmental concerns in the United States. But researchers from Rice and Baruch College have found evidence that religious identification and belief in a god dampen the otherwise strong negative effect that political conservatism typically has on whether people make purchasing decisions with concern for the environment in mind. Elaine Howard Ecklund, the Herbert S. Autrey Chair and Professor of Sociology and director of the Religion and Public Life Program, is quoted and graduate student Simranjit Khalsa is mentioned.

Amyloid ‘probe’ may be important in the search for Alzheimer’s cause
A metallic molecule being studied at Rice begins to glow when bound to amyloid protein fibrils of the sort implicated in Alzheimer’s disease. When triggered with ultraviolet light, the molecule glows much brighter, which enables real-time monitoring of amyloid fibrils as they aggregate in lab experiments. Angel Martí, an assistant professor of chemistry and bioengineering and of materials science and nanoengineering, and graduate student Amir Aliyan are quoted.
