Baker Institute Director Djerejian to speak in Israel 

HOUSTON – (June 1, 2016) – Ambassador Edward Djerejian, director of Rice University’s Baker Institute for Public Policy, will travel to Israel in mid-June to speak at the 16th annual Herzliya Conference and at a conference honoring former Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Shamir at Netanya Academic College.

Djerejian, a former U.S. ambassador to Syria and to Israel and a former assistant secretary of state for near eastern affairs, is available for interviews in advance of his trip and while in Israel.

The topic of Djerejian’s speech at the influential Herzliya Conference will be “Best Practices of Foreign Ministers in the 21st Century.” The theme of the June 14-16 conference is “Setting a New Agenda for Israel in a Turbulent Middle East.” The title of the June 8 conference at Netanya Academic College is “100 Years Since the Birthday of Prime Minister Yitzhak Shamir.” It will feature a keynote address by Djerejian on Shamir’s career and legacy and Djerejian will receive the Award for Humanitarian Diplomacy.

Djerejian’s career in the U.S. Foreign Service spanned the administrations of eight presidents from John F. Kennedy to Bill Clinton. Djerejian is a leading expert on national security, foreign policy and the complex political, security, economic, religious and ethnic issues of the Middle East and South Asia. He has played key roles in the Arab-Israeli peace process and regional conflict resolution. He is the author of “Danger and Opportunity: An American Ambassador’s Journey Through the Middle East.”
