Esther Fernández, assistant professor of Spanish, Portuguese and Latin American studies, presented “Bordering Performances: Staging the Comedia at the Chamizal National Memorial (El Paso)” in the “Performing the Comedia in U.S. Contexts” session at the annual meeting of the Renaissance Society of America in Boston March 31. She also presented “Laurencia Then and Now: A Transhistorical Reading of ‘Fuente Ovejuna’” in the “Early Modern Spanish Literature and Culture” session at the XVII annual Conference in Latin American and Iberian Languages, Literatures and Cultures in Lubbock, Texas, April 2.

Rice University bioengineering graduate student Alexander Tatara has been chosen for a 2016 Milton Huppert Graduate Student Award from the Medical Mycological Society of the Americas. Named in honor of immunologist Milton Huppert, the award recognizes outstanding graduate student work in medical mycology. Tatara, who works in the lab of bioengineer Antonios Mikos, was chosen for research toward improved understanding of disease pathogenesis and for the development of innovative biomaterials to prevent infection and regenerate tissue growth.
