March, April events at Rice’s Shepherd School of Music

HOUSTON – (Feb. 24, 2016) – Events at Rice University’s Shepherd School of Music during March and April include the Shepherd School Opera’s production of “A Midsummer Night’s Dream,” faculty recitals and season finale orchestra concerts.

Music notesUnless otherwise noted, all performances below are free and open to the public and held in Alice Pratt Brown Hall.

What: SYZYGY, New Music at Rice: Featuring faculty members James Dunham on viola, Leone Buyse on flute, Robert Atherholt on oboe, Barbara Butler on trumpet, Brian Connelly on piano and students of the Shepherd School. The program will include faculty composer Arthur Gottschalk’s “Trumpet Sonata,” Kaija Saariaho’s “Cendres,” Oliver Knussen’s “Cantata” and Robert Beaser’s “Variations for Flute and Piano.”
Where: Duncan Recital Hall.
When: March 11 at 8 p.m.

What: Shepherd School Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Larry Rachleff. Program includes the world premiere of faculty composer Richard Lavenda’s “From the Start,” Mussorgsky’s “Pictures at an Exhibition” (Jerry Hou, conductor) and Nielsen’s Symphony No. 4, Op. 29, “The Inextinguishable.”
Where: Stude Concert Hall.
When: March 12 at 8 p.m.

What: Sharing the Spotlight Series featuring faculty member James Dunham on viola and student Andrew Staupe on piano. The program will include music from Hindemith, Shostakovich, Janice Macaulay and Brahms.
Where: Duncan Recital Hall.
When: March 13 at 3 p.m.

What: Britten’s “A Midsummer Night’s Dream,” featuring the Shepherd School Opera and Chamber Orchestra, with Richard Bado as conductor and stage direction by Edward Berkely. The opera will be sung in English with English surtitles.
Where: Wortham Opera Theatre.
When: March 16 and 18 at 7:30 p.m.; March 20 at 2 p.m.
Tickets: $12 for general admission; $10 for students and senior citizens. Call 713-348-8000 for more information.

What: Sharing the Spotlight Series featuring faculty members Richie Hawley on clarinet and Benjamin Kamins as narrator with Shepherd School student performers. The program will feature Stravinsky’s “L’histoire du soldat.”
Where: Duncan Recital Hall.
When: March 20 at 8 p.m.

What: The Rice Chorale and members of the Houston Masterworks Chorus, conducted by Thomas Jaber. The program will feature the world premiere of Emma Wine’s “Cloud Upon Cloud” and Mozart’s Requiem in D Minor, K626.
Where: Stude Concert Hall.
When: March 21 at 7:30 p.m.

What: Faculty and guest artist recital featuring Jon Kimura Parker on piano, Kathleen Winkler on violin, Norman Fischer on cello and guest Aloysia Friedmann on viola. The program will feature Mozart’s “Sonata for Violin and Piano in G Major, KV 301;” Mozart’s “Quartet for Piano and Strings in G Minor, KV 478;” and Schubert’s “Piano Trio No. 1 in B-flat, Op. 99, D 898.”
Where: Duncan Recital Hall.
When: March 24 at 8 p.m.

What: Hear&Now, a student-led new music ensemble conducted by Jerry Hou.
Where: Duncan Recital Hall.
When: April 4 at 8 p.m.

What: Spring Chamber Music Festival, featuring music of the 19th century.
Where: Duncan Recital Hall.
When: April 9 from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Beginning April 4, program and performance times will be available on the Shepherd School website (www.music.rice.edu) or by calling 713-348-8008.

What: Shepherd School Chamber Orchestra, conducted by Larry Rachleff. The program will feature Debussy’s “Afternoon of a Faun” (Jerry Hou, conductor); Bernstein’s “Serenade (After Plato’s Symposium)” featuring violin soloist Natalie Lin; Haydn’s Symphony No. 103 in E-flat Major, “Drum Roll”; and the world premiere of a new piece by faculty composer Kurt Stallmann.
Where: Stude Concert Hall.
When: April 17 at 2:30 p.m.

What: Shepherd School Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Larry Rachleff. The program includes Thomas Dougherty’s “Three Dances for Orchestra” (Jerry Hou, conductor) and Mahler’s Symphony No. 6 in A Minor, “Tragic.”
Where: Stude Concert Hall.
When: April 21 at 8 p.m.
Admission: Tickets are required, but admission is free. Call 713-348-8000 to reserve tickets beginning March 21.
