HOUSTON – (Jan. 29, 2016) – Teams of students from seven Greater Houston area high schools will compete in the third annual Houston High School Ethics Bowl at Rice University’s School of Humanities Feb. 6. The event is a regional qualifier for the national Ethics Bowl competition.

Hosted by Rice’s Department of Philosophy, the bowl requires students to engage in an argument-based analysis of ethical case studies and emphasizes dialogue and civility among participants. All bowl activities will take place from 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in the Humanities Building, 6100 Main St. Limited seating for the public will be available, and those interested in attending must RSVP to co-organizers Peter Zuk and Dave Erdel at peter.d.zuk@rice.edu and david.erdel@rice.edu, respectively.

The schools competing in this year’s bowl are the Awty International School, Clements High School, the John Cooper School, St. John’s School, the Village School, Westchester Academy for International Studies and the Woodlands High School. This year’s case studies will cover a range of timely topics, including voting rights, genetic screening and disability, charity, for-profit schools, and racism and professional athletics.

“We’re hoping to create another intense, engaging and rewarding day for the students,” said Zuk, a graduate student in the Philosophy Department. “The Ethics Bowl is a great way for high school students to deepen their understanding and appreciation of interesting ethical and philosophical issues.”

More information about the competition and this year’s case study topics can be found on the National High School Ethics Bowl’s Web page, http://nhseb.unc.edu.

Members of the media are welcome to cover the Ethics Bowl but must RSVP to Jeff Falk, associate director of national media relations at Rice, at 713-348-6775 or jfalk@rice.edu.
