January-February events at Rice’s Shepherd School of Music

HOUSTON – (Jan. 21, 2016) – Events at Rice University’s Shepherd School of Music in January and February include concerts celebrating the composers Schumann and Poulenc. Unless otherwise noted, all performances are free and open to the public.

What: Sharing the Spotlight series: Frank Huang “Farewell” Concert
Outgoing Houston Symphony concertmaster Frank Huang will be joined by Shepherd School faculty and students in a farewell concert before assuming his new role as concertmaster of the New York Philharmonic.

Program: Schubert’s Piano Trio in E-flat Major, D. 929 and Mendelssohn’s Octet, Op. 20.

What: The Shepherd Society’s Family Concert
Featuring the Shepherd School Symphony Orchestra performing selections from Prokofiev’s “Romeo & Juliet” suites.

Where: Stude Concert Hall, Alice Pratt Brown Hall at the Shepherd School of Music.

A celebration of the 160th anniversary of the death of Robert Schumann.

Program: Bartók’s Music for Strings, Percussion and Celesta (Jerry Hou, conductor) and Mendelssohn’s Symphony No. 4 in A Major, Op. 90, “Italian.”

When: Friday, Feb. 12, at 8 p.m.

What: Sharing the Spotlight: Music of Francis Poulenc
Richie Hawley, clarinet.
Brian Connelly, piano.
Geoffrey Hahn, baritone.
Alexandra Smither, reader.
Program: Songs, piano solos, the Sonata for Clarinet and Piano and “The Story of Babar” for reader and piano. There will be a preconcert talk on Poulenc, his music and Rice’s recent acquisition of the Lambiotte Poulenc Archive, The talk will be hosted by Mary D. Brower, music librarian of Fondren Library.
