 Improving college students’ STEM success is topic at Rice’s Baker Institute Nov. 18

HOUSTON – (Nov. 13, 2015) – David Laude, senior vice provost and professor of chemistry at the University of Texas at Austin, will speak about efforts to create collaborative partnerships to improve college students’ success in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) fields at Rice University’s Baker Institute for Public Policy Nov. 18.

Part of the Baker Institute’s Civic Scientist Lecture Series, the event is free and open to the public, but registration is required.

Who: David Laude, senior vice provost and professor of chemistry at the University of Texas at Austin.

What: A lecture titled “Creating a Campus Culture Where Every STEM Student Graduates.”

When: Wednesday, Nov. 18, noon-2 p.m. Lunch will be provided.

Where: Rice University, Baker Hall, Doré Commons, 6100 Main St.

Laude believes that collaborative partnerships are needed to improve students’ success in STEM fields with the expectation that every student will graduate. In his lecture, he will describe his efforts and successes at UT-Austin to create such an environment. UT-Austin’s innovative methods have resulted in historic highs in STEM student persistence and graduation rates, helping increase the STEM workforce for the future, Laude said.

This event, also a part of the Shell Distinguished Lecture Series, is co-hosted by the Baker Institute’s Science and Technology Policy Program and the George R. Brown School of Engineering and Wiess School of Natural Sciences at Rice and funded by a gift from Benjamin and Winifer Cheng.
