New York Philharmonic musicians visit Rice Shepherd School of Music for Global Academy auditions

HOUSTON – (Oct. 26, 2015) – Musicians from the New York Philharmonic will be holding auditions at Rice University’s Shepherd School of Music Nov. 1-3 for the Philharmonic’s Global Academy. Members of the media are invited to observe as Shepherd School students rehearse with members of the New York Philharmonic.

The academy is a fellowship program that includes customized collaborations with partners worldwide that offer intensive training of pre-professional musicians by New York Philharmonic members. The Shepherd School has the distinction of being the first school of music selected for this prestigious partnership.

These auditions are the first in a multiyear partnership between the New York Philharmonic and the Shepherd School. A group of student string players will be selected to travel to New York in May 2016 for immersive coaching, outreach and performance opportunities with the New York Philharmonic.

The Nov. 1-3 visit includes a rehearsal of Brahms’ Symphony No. 1 in C Minor, Op. 68 with the Shepherd School Symphony Orchestra, during which the visiting members of the New York Philharmonic will play and coach onstage alongside the students.

What: New York Philharmonic musicians Michelle Kim (violin), Cynthia Phelps (viola), Eric Bartlett (cello) and Max Zeugner (bass) will rehearse with and coach Rice’s Shepherd School Symphony Orchestra.

Interview opportunities include Matthew VanBesien, president and executive director of the New York Philharmonic, and Robert Yekovich, dean of the Shepherd School.

When: Monday, Nov. 2, at 2 p.m.

Where: Stude Concert Hall in Alice Pratt Brown Hall, Rice University, Entrance 8 or 18.
