Founded in 2011, the collaborative program aims to strengthen the relationship between Rice and the Fifth Ward of Houston by developing and implementing long-term projects focused on the sustainable reduction of poverty.

Selected students will spend the fall training to prepare for the spring semester, when they will be assigned to one of 10 participating Fifth Ward organizations that focus on public health, education, fair housing and community engagement. Simultaneously, students will be enrolled in Inequality and Urban Life (Sociology 470), where they will discuss academic literature related to their projects and reflect upon what they’ve learned in the community.

Information sessions will be held Sept. 9 at 7 p.m. in Rayzor Hall, Room 205, and Sept. 17 at 7 p.m. in Rayzor Hall, Room 304. Refreshments will be provided.

Applications are due Sept. 28, and applicants will be informed of acceptance Oct. 13.
