Owls help flood victims

While other college football teams were gearing up for summer workouts and camps, Rice head football coach David Bailiff and his Owls were doing an entirely different sort of heavy lifting. When the team heard about one of Rice’s own staff members needing help after the recent floods that devastated much of Houston, they quickly came to the rescue. The team rallied behind Julie Bogar, senior operations manager for the South Servery kitchens. The home of Bogar’s 86-year-old mother took on more than three feet of water during the storm; her mother had to be rescued and carried to safety by a neighbor. The aftermath was overwhelming. Bailiff and his players spent the day in the Meyerland neighborhood removing debris, pulling out water-soaked drywall and helping salvage what hadn’t been ruined by the flood. At the Bogar home, the team moved furniture and heavy items. “They were great! They were our muscle!” Bogar said.
