Construction, repairs planned for holiday break

The classrooms will be idle during the holiday break, but the Facilities Engineering and Planning (FE&P) staff won’t be. At the Dec. 9 Administrators’ Forum, Kathy Jones, assistant vice president for project management and engineering, and Russell Price, assistant vice president for facilities, gave an overview of the construction and maintenance projects planned during the winter vacation period.

Among the construction and repair projects that are scheduled:

The recreation pool at the Gibbs Wellness and Recreation Center will be replastered during the holiday break.

* Construction of the Moody Center for the Arts began Dec. 11 on the land formerly occupied by the Jake Hess tennis courts.

* The parking lots near Anderson-Clarke Center will be resurfaced in phases between Dec. 19 and Jan. 5.

* Due to weathering of the statue of Edgar Odell Lovett, the stone base will be grinded so the donors’ names can be re-engraved to improve legibility.

* The 15,000-volt electrical switchgear that controls power to the central campus will be inspected and repaired from 6 a.m. Jan. 5 through 5 p.m. Jan. 9. The majority of the campus will not be impacted, but critical research and other sensitive systems should take necessary precautions. Each of the following facilities will experience a power outage for about an hour:
— Alice Pratt Brown Hall
— Anderson-Clarke Center
— George R. Brown Tennis Center
— Annex Building (RUPD, ROTC, Delivery Services)
— Rice Stadium
— Tudor Fieldhouse
— Rice Media Center
— Reckling Park
— Holloway Track and Field
— North Lot (parking)
— Recreation Intramural Fields
— FE&P Training Center

* In Alice Pratt Brown Hall, carpet will be replaced in Stude Concert Hall, Grand Hall and Recital Hall between Dec. 19 and Jan. 3.

* Road, curb, gutter and ramp repairs will take place around campus between Dec. 18 and Jan. 9. So will repairs to decomposed granite pathways.

* The exterior walls of Hamman Hall and the Brown Garden at the Rice Memorial Center (RMC)/Ley Student Center will be cleaned between Dec. 18 and Jan. 9.

The floor in M.D. Anderson Hall will be leveled in early January.

* The recreation pool at the Gibbs Recreation and Wellness Center will be replastered between Dec. 1 and Jan. 5.

* Repair work will be done on the air conditioning units that serve the dean’s suite in George R. Brown Hall (Dec. 26-Jan. 3) and the east side basement and first floor of Ryon Lab (Dec. 19-Jan. 3).

* The wood floor will be refinished in the RMC’s Grand Hall and Farnsworth Pavilion, Gibbs Recreation and Wellness Center and Cohen House Dining Room between Dec. 19 and Jan. 3. The Reckling Fitness Center will also be renovated into a training room.

* Seat cushions will be replaced in Duncan Hall (rooms 1064 and 1075) and Dell Butcher Hall (Room 180) between Dec. 19 and Jan. 3.
