HOUSTON – (Sept. 3, 2014) – Rice University’s Shepherd School of Music will open its 2014-15 concert season with orchestra concerts, chamber music, faculty recitals and “Sharing the Spotlight” performances. Unless otherwise noted, all performances will be in Alice Pratt Brown Hall and are free and open to the public.

What:             Rice Chorale: 09/11/01 In Memoriam: “Pacem.”
The Rice Chorale presents music of peace led by Thomas Jaber, conductor and pianist.
Where:           Duncan Recital Hall.
When:            Thursday, Sept. 11, at noon.

What:             Faculty and guest artist recital.
Thomas Jaber, organist.
Andrea Jaber, mezzo-soprano (guest).
Where:           Edythe Bates Old Recital Hall and Grand Organ.
When:            Friday, Sept. 12, at 7:30 p.m.

What:             Faculty recital: The Fischer Duo presents an all-Brahms program.
Norman Fischer, cello.
Jeanne Kierman, piano.
Julie Simson, mezzo-soprano.
Where:           Duncan Recital Hall.
When:            Friday, Sept. 19, at 8 p.m.

What:             Faculty recital.
Julie Simson, mezzo-soprano.

When:            Tuesday, Sept. 23, at 8 p.m.

What:             Shepherd School Chamber Orchestra.

Program: Rossini’s “Semiramide Overture,” Mendelssohn’s Piano Concerto No. 1 in G Minor, Op. 25 (featuring Hui-Shan Chin, soloist, and Jerry Hou, conductor) and Beethoven’s Symphony No. 8 in F Major, Op. 93.
Where:           Stude Concert Hall.
When:            Saturday, Sept. 27, at 8 p.m.

What:             Shepherd School Symphony Orchestra.
Larry Rachleff, music director.
Program: Barber’s “Overture to The School for Scandal,” Webern’s “Six Pieces for Orchestra, Op. 6” and Prokofiev’s Symphony No. 5 in B-Flat Major, Op. 100.
Where:           Stude Concert Hall.
When:            Thursday, Oct. 2, and Saturday, Oct. 4, at 8 p.m.
Admission:    Reserved seating: $12; students and senior citizens: $10.

What:             “Sharing the Spotlight”: Faculty and students perform side by side.
A concert of Baroque trio sonatas and arias played on original instruments.  Music of Vivaldi, Handel, Telemann and more.

When:            Thursday, Oct. 9, at 8 p.m.

What:             “Sharing the Spotlight”: Faculty and students perform side by side.
SYZYGY, New Music at Rice. Works by Karim Al-Zand, Judith Shatin, Arthur Gottschalk and Pierre Jalbert.
Where:           Duncan Recital Hall.
When:            Friday, Oct. 24, at 8 p.m.

What:             Faculty recital: “Bohemian Piano Trios.”
Kathleen Winkler, violin; Norman Fischer, cello; Robert Moeling, piano. Music of Dvorák, Suk and Smetana.

When:            Sunday, Oct. 26, at 8 p.m.

What:             Faculty and guest artist recital: Chamber music of Schubert.

What:             Faculty recital: Barbara Butler and Charles Geyer, professors of trumpet.

What:             Guest artist master class.
Innovative flutist Claire Chase, founder and artistic director of the International Contemporary Ensemble. Sponsored by Da Camera of Houston.
Where:           Hirsch Orchestra Rehearsal Hall.
When:            Friday, Oct. 31 at noon.
