Cybersecurity and civil society topic at Rice’s Baker Institute April 23

American computer scientist and former U.S. government official Anita Jones will discuss the balance between personal computer privacy and national security interests at Rice University’s Baker Institute for Public Policy April 23.

This Baker Institute Civic Scientist Lecture Series event is open to the public and will be from 6 to 7:30 p.m. in Baker Hall’s Doré Commons. A reception will follow.

Neal Lane, senior fellow in science and technology policy at the Baker Institute and former science adviser to President Bill Clinton, will give welcoming remarks.

Jones is department chair and the Owen R. Cheatham Professor of Computer Science Emeritus at the University of Virginia. A Rice alumna, she joined the University of Virginia as a professor and the chair of the Computer Science Department in 1988. From 1993 to 1997 she served as director of defense research and engineering at the U.S. Department of Defense, where she oversaw the department’s research laboratories, science and technology program, and Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency. She has also served as vice chair of the National Science Board, co-chair of the Virginia Research and Technology Advisory Commission and a member of the Defense Science Board.

The event, which is part of the Shell Distinguished Lecture Series, is co-hosted by the Baker Institute’s Science and Technology Policy Program, Rice’s Brown School of Engineering, Ken Kennedy Institute for Information Technology and Wiess School of Natural Sciences.
