Feeding the hungry

The Rice Coalition on Hunger and Homelessness recently hosted two events to fight hunger in the Houston area and abroad. On April 12, 50 Rice volunteers gathered to assemble 10,000 meals for overseas distribution for humanitarian efforts. This event was a joint effort between the Rice Coalition on Hunger and Homelessness and Stop Hunger Now, a nonprofit that works on relief efforts for areas affected by starvation.

On April 13, Rive volunteers coordinated an event at which 130 students from Alexander Hamilton Middle School and Reagan High School joined together to prepare over 1,800 meals for low-income kids in the city of Houston. During the event, the Rice Coalition partnered with Kids Meals Houston, a local nonprofit that serves approximately 2,000 low-income kids ages 5 and under who are too young to benefit from the free school lunch program.
