Pete Dawkins, one of Time Magazine’s ‘Top 50 Leaders in the US,’ to speak at Rice

Retired U.S. Army Brig. Gen. Pete Dawkins, a Heisman Trophy winner, Rhodes Scholar, business executive and former Republican candidate for U.S. Senate, will speak at Rice University’s Jones Graduate School of Business April 21 at the Rice Veterans Leadership Series, “An Evening with Pete Dawkins.”

The talk, which is hosted by Rice’s Veterans in Business Association, is free and open to the public and will be at 6 p.m. in McNair Hall’s Shell Auditorium. A reception will take place at 5:15 p.m. in the Anderson Family Commons.

Dawkins is senior adviser to Virtu Financial, the world’s largest electronic trading and market-making firms. A 1959 graduate of West Point, he served for 24 years in the U.S. Army. In 1976, Time Magazine named Dawkins one of the “Top 50 Leaders in the United States.” In 1983, following his career in the Army, Dawkins entered the world of business. He joined Lehman Brothers as head of the firm’s public finance banking business.

After running in 1988 as the Republican candidate for the U.S. Senate in New Jersey, he moved to Bain and Company, a Boston-based strategy consulting firm, where he became head of the U.S. consulting business. In 1991, he was recruited to become chairman and CEO of Primerica Financial Services and led the company for the next five years.

Following his Primerica tenure, Dawkins held a series of executive positions in what became Citigroup. He served as vice chairman and executive vice president of Travelers Insurance, then vice chairman of the Citigroup Private Bank and then vice chairman of Citigroup Global Wealth Management.
