Rice Provost George McLendon visited universities in Israel last week as part of a select delegation of nine provosts invited by Project Interchange, a nonprofit educational institute of the American Jewish Committee.

The educational visit is tailored to the interests of senior leadership within American universities and colleges. The seminar was designed to examine the complex issues facing Israel and the region at a time when many campuses are giving attention to the pursuit of peace in the Middle East.

Participants in the delegation are meeting with Jewish, Arab Israeli and Palestinian senior officials, and also with nongovernmental organizations, media and community and university leaders. The programming explores academic and student exchanges, research collaboration and technology transfer.

Tel Aviv University and Hebrew University are among the sites being visited.

President David Leebron participated in a similar Project Interchange seminar in Israel for university presidents in 2007.
