Rice mourns loss of Sid Rich undergraduate

The Rice University community is mourning the loss of undergraduate student Alex Zhou, a member of Sid Richardson College who had planned to study bioengineering.

In an email to the Rice campus Sept. 25, Dean of Undergraduates John Hutchinson, said Zhou joined Rice this semester after transferring from the University of Texas at Austin.

“Unfortunately, he was also struggling with cancer and was hospitalized at MD Anderson Cancer Center before his passing this week,” Hutchinson wrote.

“Although very few of us had the chance to get to know Alex, we can feel honored that he chose to join Rice at this challenging time in his life. Let us pause to remember Alex and to appreciate how fortunate we all are to be part of a caring campus community with exceptional people like Alex.”

Memorial services for Zhou were Sept. 29 at Winford Funeral Home.
