Rice United Way Campaign for 2013-14 kicks off Sept. 17

Rice has set records in each of that last six years as it raised contributions for the United Way of Greater Houston, the organization that helps Houstonians in need of food, clothing, shelter and other services.

United WayFaculty and staff can again help the less fortunate by making a donation to the 2013–14 Rice Campaign for United Way, which officially kicks off Sept. 17.

The goal for this year is $175,000, said Director of University Relations Greg Marshall, who is the campaign manager.

Last year Rice’s campaign broke all records by raising more than $200,00. Over the past six years, Rice has emerged as a leading contributor to United Way of Greater Houston and is now among the community’s top 100 donor institutions.

Rice employees’ contributions to United Way not only help the entire Greater Houston community; they also support the university’s Vision for the Second Century commitment to engaging with the city.

Honorary chairs for this year’s campaign are Rice Board Chairman Bobby Tudor ’82; Rice President David Leebron; and Provost George McLendon. Lead donors chair is University Representative Y. Ping Sun. Faculty chair is Wade Adams, senior faculty fellow in mechanical engineering and materials science, and staff chair is Barbara White Bryson, associate vice president for facilities engineering and planning.

Rice employees may make a pledge payable by payroll deductions spread over all paychecks in calendar (and tax) year 2014 by logging in at esther.rice.edu and clicking the “United Way” link to authorize a direct payroll contribution, or use the pledge form on the Rice United Way website, www.rice.edu/unitedway. That same form may also be used to make a cash, check or credit card gift (for tax year 2013).
