Internationally acclaimed soprano Renée Fleming to present Rice University master class Sept. 5



HOUSTON – (Sept. 4, 2013) – Rice University’s Shepherd School of Music will host internationally acclaimed soprano Renée Fleming Sept. 5 from 7 to 9 p.m. in Alice Pratt Brown Hall’s Stude Concert Hall for its annual Aleko Endowed Master Class in Voice. Fleming will be available to speak with members of the media from 6:30 to 6:50 p.m., and media are welcome to photograph or film the first 30 minutes of the master class from 7 to 7:30 p.m.

Fleming will headline with the Houston Symphony for its Centennial Opening Night Concert and Gala at 7:30 p.m. Sept. 7.

What:             Media availability prior to master class at Rice University’s Shepherd School of Music.

When:            Sept. 5, including 6:30-6:50 p.m. interview availability with Renée Fleming and 7-7:30 p.m. opportunity for photography and video.

Where:           Interviews with Fleming will take place in Alice Pratt Brown Hall, Room 1602. The master class will be held in Alice Pratt Brown Hall’s Stude Concert Hall. Alice Pratt Brown Hall is located on the campus of Rice University at 6100 Main St.

Fleming was the featured soloist at the 2009 Shepherd School Gala. At a White House ceremony in July of this year, President Barack Obama awarded her the National Medal of Arts, America’s highest honor for an individual artist. Known as “the people’s diva” and winner of the 2013 Grammy Award for Best Classical Vocal Solo for her CD “Poèmes,” Fleming continues to grace the world’s greatest opera stages and concert halls. She has now extended her reach to include other musical forms and media. Over the past few seasons, Fleming has hosted a wide variety of television and radio broadcasts, including the Metropolitan Opera’s “Live in HD series” for movie theaters and television and “Live From Lincoln Center” on PBS.

Members of the media interested in attending the event must remain in the designated press section near the public entrance to Stude Concert Hall and are required to set up their equipment by 6:55 p.m. and complete their photography and videography by 7:30 p.m. Flash photography is prohibited during the master class, and photography and video recording should be limited to moments when students are not singing. Once the class begins, cameras must be stationary. No late entry or early exit will be permitted, and press must wait until the transition between the first and second students to exit Stude Concert Hall.
