Friday was a day of mixed blessings for Austin Kubitza. The Rice ace was to have started the opening game of the NCAA Super Regional Tournament against North Carolina State, only to have it postponed for a day by Tropical Storm Andrea.

The best-of-three series to determine which team will go to the College World Series is now scheduled to begin Saturday at 3 p.m. Central time. The game will be broadcast on ESPN 2 and webcast on ESPN 3. Game 2 is scheduled for Sunday, also at 3 p.m. Central, and if necessary, Game 3 will be played Monday at a time to be determined.

Earlier in the day Kubitza, a junior, was claimed by the Detroit Tigers in the fourth round of the Major League Baseball draft.

Kubitza told the Houston Chronicle, “I’m with Rice right now; that’s all I’m worried about – getting to Omaha. The draft can wait.”

The 8-4 Kubitza is scheduled to face North Carolina State ace Carlos Rodon in the opener.
