Speakers include Ken Medlock, fellow in energy and resource economics at the Baker Institute, senior director of the institute’s Center for Energy Studies and adjunct professor and lecturer in Rice’s Economics Department; Edgard Habib, chief economist at Chevron Corp.; Daniel Ahn, visiting scholar at the International Monetary Fund; Mahmoud El-Gamal, professor of economics and Chair of Islamic Economics, Finance and Management at Rice and Rice scholar at the Baker Institute; Amy Myers Jaffe, executive director of energy and sustainability at the University of California-Davis Institute of Transportation Studies; Charles McConnell, former assistant secretary for fossil energy in the U.S. Department of Energy; and Edward Djerejian, Baker Institute founding director.

The conference, “Energy Market Globalization: Investment and Commodity Price Cycles and the Role of Geopolitics,” will be from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. in Baker Hall’s Kelly International Conference Facility.

Over several decades, episodes affecting financial and energy markets have brought dramatic change and created challenges for energy companies as the investment climate evolves, conference organizers said. The conference is the capstone of a Baker Institute study on the interaction of the oil investment cycle and the general business cycle that includes consideration of how the global economy and capital investments are influenced by oil prices.

The event is free and open to the public. RSVPs are requested at www.bakerinstitute.org/events/energy-market-globalization-investment-and-commodity-price-cycles-and-the-role-of-geopolitics/subscribe.
