Marcia Citron, the Lovett Distinguished Service Professor of Musicology at the Shepherd School of Music, has been elected an honorary member of the American Musicological Society. Honorary memberships are given to “long-standing members of the society who have made outstanding contributions to furthering its stated objective.”

Musiqa, a Houston-based contemporary music ensemble directed by Anthony Brandt, associate professor of composition and theory, and co-founded by Karim Al-Zand, associate professor of composition and theory, and Pierre Jalbert, professor of composition and theory, was recently honored by the Chamber Music America/American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers with an Award for Adventurous Programming.

Twenty-three principals from Beijing’s Haidian District in China visited Rice Jan. 11 to learn about Rice Digital Learning and Scholarship (RDLS), the umbrella organization for OpenStax College, STEMscopes and Connexions. Rich Baraniuk, founder of Connexions and Rice’s Victor E. Cameron Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering, and STEMscopes founder Reid Whitaker talked about how RDLS is changing education through personalized-learning systems that allow textbooks to customize themselves to readers and methods to distribute educational content at low cost.
