Film, panel discussion to explore underrepresentation of women

The award-winning documentary “Miss Representation” will be screened at the Rice Media Center Sept. 25.

Written, directed and produced by Jennifer Siebel Newson, the film explores how mainstream media contribute to the underrepresentation of women in influential positions by circulating limited and often disparaging portrayals of women.

The 6 p.m. screening will be preceded by light refreshments at 5 p.m. A panel discussion will follow the screening; the scheduled panelists are Jenifer Bratter, associate professor of sociology; Mikki Hebl, professor of psychology and management; and Rosemary Hennessy, the L.V. Favrot Chair in Humanities, professor of English literature and director of Rice’s Center for the Study of Women, Gender and Sexuality.

The event is sponsored by the Center for Women in Law, Texas Wall Street Women and Rice’s Office of Multicultural Community Relations in the Office of Public Affairs.

The event is free and open to the public, but registration is required. RSVP to Melissa Galusky at mgalusky@law.utexas.edu or 512-232-1911.
