Weisman named Electrochemical Society Fellow

Bruce Weisman, a Rice University professor of chemistry, has been elected a fellow of The Electrochemical Society (ECS) in recognition of his scientific contributions and service to the society. Weisman was one of only 14 fellows named this year among the society’s 6,500 active members. He will be honored at the organization’s 222nd meeting in Honolulu Oct. 8.

The Electrochemical Society, founded in 1902, is an international organization concerned with a broad range of topics in modern electrochemical and solid-state science and technology.

Weisman was also elected to a two-year term as chair of the Fullerenes, Nanotubes and Carbon Nanostructures Division of the society.

“I feel honored by this selection as an ECS Fellow and also by the opportunity to chair the division whose membership includes many of the world’s leading nanocarbon researchers,” he said.

Weisman and his group at Rice specialize in the spectroscopy and photophysics of fullerenes and carbon nanotubes, and in fact made the seminal discovery that semiconducting nanotubes emit fluorescence in the near-infrared range. Their subsequent research has explored a range of fundamental nanotube properties and laid the foundation for applications in biomedicine and engineering.
