Rice team builds centennial Sandcastle

A Rice University team of faculty, staff, alumni and family members won honorable mention and placed  sixth overall at the 26th AIA SandCastle Competition in Galveston June 2.

About 30 members of the Rice community sculpted Lovett Hall, 1912-2012, and the Athenian owl in only five hours. The team was lead by members of Rice’s Facilities, Engineering and Planning and has been competing in the sandcastle build for 15 years. The team, which has never included an owl or Lovett Hall in its sandcastle design, chose to tackle the ambitious task in honor of the Rice Centennial.
