Randy Hulet, the Fayez Sarofim Professor of Physics and Astronomy, and Matthew Baring, an associate professor of physics and astronomy, are on the list of Outstanding Referees chosen by Physical Review Letters. The journal selected 149 physicists this year to join Baring, named in 2009, and Hulet, named in 2010, from among 60,000 active referees. The selections recognize the quality of their peer-review work, based on two decades of records on the number, quality and timeliness of referee reports.

Rice Emergency Medical Service (REMS) received the Striving for Excellence Award at the National Collegiate EMS Foundation’s (NCEMSF) annual conference in Baltimore last weekend. The award recognizes campus EMS organizations for their operations, including delivery of care, training and continuing education of employees and volunteers and service to the community. This is the fifth Striving for Excellence Award REMS has earned. Only one other collegiate EMS agency — Emory University — was recognized this year by the NCEMSF.

Also at the NCEMSF conference, Medical Director and founder of REMS Mark Escott ’96 and REMS Director Lisa Basgall co-presented a conference session titled “From Good to Great: Growing a Collegiate EMS Service.” Escott was also a participant on a panel, “Hot Topics in EMS.” Eleven members of REMS attended the national conference, which brought together 98 other collegiate EMS programs from across the U.S. and Canada.

Entries for “People, Papers, Presentations” should be submitted to the Office of News and Media Relations by email to ricenews@rice.edu or campus mail to MS 300.
