Rice sociologist’s paper is candidate for top 5 publications of 2010

Rice sociologist Rachel Kimbro’s study, “Federal Food Policy and Childhood Obesity: A Solution or Part of the Problem?,” has been recognized as one of the most influential research articles funded by the Robert Wood

Johnson Foundation (RWJF) this year. The study found that food assistance programs might unintentionally contribute to the childhood obesity problem in cities with high food prices. The researchers also determined that subsidized meals at school or daycare are beneficial for children’s weight status, and so expanding access to subsidized meals could be the most effective tool to combat obesity in poor children.

Featured in the RWJF 2010 Year in Research listing, Kimbro’s paper was one of the top 20 articles most frequently viewed in 2010. Voting will determine if it’s one of the top five publications of the year.
