June 16 reception to honor Scott Wise

Members of the Rice community are invited to a June 16 reception honoring Scott Wise, Rice’s longtime treasurer and chief investment officer and current president of the Rice Management Company. The reception will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. in Brochstein Pavilion.

Wise announced this spring that he will join TIAA-CREF as chief investment officer of a new Houston-based business that will provide investment management services for endowments and foundations around the country, effective June 21.

Wise has served as Rice’s chief investment officer since 1989. Under his leadership, Rice’s endowment grew from $990 million in 1989 to $3.9 billion, with an 11 percent average annual investment return compared with an average investment return of 9 percent for university endowments nationwide over this 20-year period. In October 2009, Wise was named president of Rice Management Company, a new internal organization created by Rice to focus exclusively on managing the university’s investments.
